First step in your job search – develop a network
A successful job search often starts informally. For example, your instructors and classmates in your online classes can be the foundation of a professional network that can be source of job leads, advice and coaching. The tips you receive from people in the same field — teachers and students — can be invaluable.
Second step in your job search – contact our Career Services department
Our formal career services for online students are as strong as our other support systems. The result is that our online students have exceptional placement rates — in some quarters close to 100%. We help students throughout Minnesota and the US find new positions or obtain well-deserved promotions. We tailor our career assistance to the student’s location. This can involve recommending local sources of information or referring someone to the local Chamber of Commerce. Our career services for online students can be as personal as a telephone call or e-mail. Or they can be as general as a national webinar or teleconference. Our webinars have included topics such as finding hidden job opportunities, interviewing or creating a great resume.
Career Management Center
Our career services staff has created a Career Management Center in Blackboard, the online course management application. This “course” is designed especially for online MBA students and covers topics such as negotiating salaries, developing elevator speeches and researching companies. It is another example of the robust online support we offer.
Mock interviews — practice that sometimes produces surprising results
All online students undertake mock interviews, whether they are located in Minnesota or Texas. Many of these mock interviews lead to new jobs or promotions. Our graduates are prepared not just for interviewing, but also for contributing from their first days on the job.
Working with employers
In addition to working with students, our online career services staff connects with employers and potential employers via telephone, e-mail and chat. These networking efforts pay dividends for our students, who don’t just find jobs: they establish careers.
