An in-demand credential and interesting work

Paralegals perform a wide range of challenging tasks under the supervision of  attorneys. They undertake complex legal research, prepare trial notebooks and exhibits, conduct public records searches and interview clients. Paralegals with bachelor’s degrees are in demand, and the US Department of Labor predicts opportunities for paralegals will increase through 2014.

Credits required

The online certificate program at Globe University-Online requires students to complete a maximum of 33 core credits; they can earn this credential in as little as three quarters or nine months of full-time study. And if already working in the legal field, they may be able to receive credit for work experience and prior learning, decreasing their costs and allowing them to complete the programs more quickly.*

Courses in the online certificate program

Students complete core requirements that cover the following topics:

  • Legal terminology
  • Legal research
  • Torts
  • Litigation
  • Legal writing
  • Corporate business structures
  • Probate practice
  • Career development

They also select from electives such as criminal and family law, supervisory management, law office procedures, medical terminology, keyboarding and MS Office Professional.

What types of jobs are available?

People with paralegal credentials are not limited to working in law offices. They find legal jobs in a variety of industries and settings and pursue careers such as these:

  • Compliance specialist
  • Collections assistant
  • Judicial assistant
  • Legal investigator
  • Title closer
  • Legal recruiter

Positions such as these often pay well. In fact, the NALA Compensation Survey reports that the average annual compensation for all paralegals in the Great Lakes region, including Minnesota and Wisconsin, is $51,001. Some paralegals earn far more, depending on their experience and their area of the country.
