Not your grandfather’s distance learning
Today’s online learning programs are the direct descendants of distance education classes that began in the 19th century. In those days, students would complete the assigned readings and mail the homework to a teacher in a distant city. The student rarely received any feedback, and what little there was arrived weeks or months after the assignment was completed. This approach to distance learning continued well into the 1970s, when conference phone calls tried to simulate a classroom environment.
